An electrician invoice bills for electrical work: installation, repair, testing and certification. It lists licensed labour, any apprentice labour, materials and the certificate that proves the work meets code. In regulated markets the certificate is part of the job, and noting it on the invoice matters for the customer's records.

What a electrician invoice should include

  • Your business name, licence number and contact details
  • The customer and the job address
  • Licensed and apprentice labour as separate lines with hours and rate
  • Switchboard parts, cable and fixings as material lines
  • Any certificate of compliance and its fee
  • Tax details, including ABN in Australia
  • Payment terms and guarantee

How to itemise the work

Split licensed labour from apprentice labour, because the rates differ and customers appreciate seeing it. Group materials sensibly rather than listing every screw. Always include the certificate of compliance as its own line where the work requires one, since it is both a legal document and a selling point.

Typical rates by region

RegionTypical billing
United States$50 to $130 per hour
United Kingdom£40 to £90 per hour
Eurozone€45 to €95 per hour
CanadaC$65 to C$135 per hour
AustraliaA$80 to A$150 per hour

Indicative ranges for guidance. Your rate depends on experience, location and the job.

Tax and compliance

Australian electricians add GST at 10 percent and must show their ABN, or the customer may be required to withhold tax. UK electricians registered for VAT charge 20 percent. In the US, labour is frequently exempt while parts are taxable, though rules differ by state.

Payment terms

Domestic work is usually paid on completion. Larger commercial or new-build jobs often run on staged payments or net 30. Release the certificate of compliance on payment, and note the warranty period on the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Why show apprentice labour separately?+

Apprentice time is charged at a lower rate than a licensed electrician's, so splitting the two lines gives the customer an honest, lower bill and shows exactly who did what. It also protects you if anyone later questions the labour cost.

Do I need my ABN or licence number on the invoice?+

In Australia, yes. Without an ABN on the invoice a business customer may have to withhold tax from your payment, and your electrical licence number belongs there too. In other countries your trade registration or licence number adds credibility even where it is not strictly required.
