A carpenter invoice bills for joinery and woodwork, from fitted furniture to structural work. Bespoke jobs mix design and measuring, workshop build time, materials, and on-site fitting. Because the timber and hardware are a real cost, the invoice usually separates materials from labour so the customer can see both.

What a carpenter invoice should include

  • Your business name and contact details
  • The customer and the job address
  • Design, template and measure, if charged
  • Workshop build time, often per day
  • Timber, sheet materials and hardware
  • On-site fitting and finishing
  • Tax and payment terms

How to itemise the work

Separate the stages: design and measure, workshop build, materials, then fitting. Name the materials at a sensible level, such as timber, ply and hardware, rather than every screw. If you use a particular grade of timber, mention it, because solid oak and a cheaper softwood are very different jobs and prices.

Typical rates by region

RegionTypical billing
United States$40 to $90 per hour
United Kingdom£180 to £320 per day
Eurozone€200 to €380 per day
CanadaC$300 to C$550 per day
AustraliaA$350 to A$650 per day

Indicative ranges for guidance. Your rate depends on experience, location and the job.

Tax and compliance

UK and EU carpenters registered for VAT charge it on labour and materials. Australian tradespeople add GST and show their ABN. In the US, the materials are usually taxable while labour treatment varies by state, so tax often lands on the materials line.

Payment terms

Bespoke joinery often runs on a deposit to cover materials, then the balance on completion. Net 7 for the balance is common for domestic work. Note the timber grade and any finish so the quote and invoice match what was agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take a deposit for bespoke work?+

Yes. Custom joinery ties up your workshop and needs materials bought before the job is done. A deposit covers the timber and hardware and confirms the customer is committed to a made-to-measure piece they cannot easily return.

How detailed should the materials line be?+

Detailed enough to be honest, not so detailed it is unreadable. Timber, ply and hardware as a grouped line is usually right, with the timber grade named. Customers want to know they are getting solid oak rather than a cheaper substitute.
