A music producer invoice bills an artist or label for studio work on a track or EP, typically split into production, mixing and mastering since these are often priced and delivered separately. Freelance producers send one invoice per project or per track depending on how the work was scoped. Any outside cost the producer covers on the artist's behalf, a session musician or a rented instrument, is usually billed back at cost.
What should a music producer invoice include?
- Your studio or business name and contact details
- The artist or label's name and billing contact
- An invoice number and the date
- Production, mixing and mastering priced as separate lines
- The number of tracks each line covers
- Session musician or outside costs passed through at cost
- File format and delivery terms for the masters
How to create a music producer invoice
- 1Add your business details. Your name, address, contact details and tax number if you are registered.
- 2Add the client. Their name and billing address. Save them to reuse next time.
- 3List the work. Break the job into clear line items the way a music producer bills (see below).
- 4Add tax. Apply your tax rate, or leave it at zero if you are not registered.
- 5Set payment terms and a due date. State when payment is due and how the client can pay.
- 6Download or send. Export a clean PDF, or email it to the client. No signup, no watermark.
How do you itemise a music producer invoice?
Split production, mixing and mastering into separate lines even when the same person does all three, since clients often want to compare your mixing rate to another engineer's, or may only need mastering on a track mixed elsewhere. Multiply the per-track rate by the number of tracks rather than quoting one lump sum for the EP, so it is clear what a single extra track would cost later. Keep session musician or outside studio costs on their own passthrough line.
What do music producers typically charge?
| Region | Typical billing |
|---|---|
| United States | $300 to $900 production, $150 to $500 mixing, $75 to $200 mastering, per track |
| United Kingdom | £250 to £750 production, £120 to £400 mixing, per track |
| Eurozone | €270 to €800 production, €130 to €430 mixing, per track |
| Australia | A$400 to A$1,100 production, per track |
Indicative ranges for guidance. Your rate depends on experience, location and the job.
Do music producers charge tax on invoices?
Studio and production services are generally not subject to sales tax in most US states when billed as a service, though a few states tax the sale of recorded media differently from the service of making it, so check your state's rules if you are delivering physical product. Session musician costs passed through at cost are not your income for tax purposes, but keep the invoice or receipt from the musician to support this.
What payment terms should a music producer use?
Half up front before booking studio time, balance on delivery of final masters, is standard for project work. For ongoing work with a label, net 15 to net 30 from delivery is common.
Frequently asked questions
Should I bill production and mixing separately even on my own tracks?+
Yes, it keeps your rate card transparent and makes it easy to quote a client who only wants mixing on a track they produced elsewhere. It also makes clear what happens to the price if they cut a track from the EP after production but before mixing.
How do I invoice for a session musician I hired?+
Pass their fee through at the cost you paid, on its own line marked as such, and keep their invoice or receipt on file. Do not add a markup unless you agreed a booking fee with the artist up front.
What if the artist wants unlimited revisions?+
Include two rounds in your quoted price and state that clearly before you start. Extra rounds beyond that get billed as an additional line at your hourly or per-revision rate.
