|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency out-of-hours callout (9pm to 7am rate) | 1 | £95.00 | £95.00 |
| Non-destructive entry, front door | 1 | £45.00 | £45.00 |
| Euro cylinder lock, supplied and fitted (British Standard) | 1 | £68.00 | £68.00 |
| Additional keys cut | 3 | £6.50 | £19.50 |
VAT at 20 percent. Out-of-hours rate applies 9pm to 7am and on bank holidays; the lock is guaranteed for 12 months, keys are not.
A locksmith's invoice needs to earn its callout fee, especially for emergency work outside normal hours. The out-of-hours rate is what covers getting a van out at 2am, and it should be its own line rather than folded into the labour, so the customer can see why a 3am lockout costs more than a Tuesday afternoon rekey.
What should a locksmith invoice include?
- Your company name, contact details and any trade association membership
- The property address the callout was for
- The callout fee, with the out-of-hours rate shown separately from the standard rate
- Entry method used, since non-destructive entry versus drilling changes the price
- Locks supplied and fitted, with the make and standard (British Standard, for example)
- Number of keys cut
How to create a locksmith invoice
- 1Add your business details. Your name, address, contact details and tax number if you are registered.
- 2Add the client. Their name and billing address. Save them to reuse next time.
- 3List the work. Break the job into clear line items the way a locksmith bills (see below).
- 4Add tax. Apply your tax rate (this example uses 20%).
- 5Set payment terms and a due date. State when payment is due and how the client can pay.
- 6Download or send. Export a clean PDF, or email it to the client. No signup, no watermark.
How do you itemise a locksmith invoice?
Keep the callout fee separate from the lock and labour so the customer can see the emergency premium clearly. If a lock had to be drilled rather than picked, say so, it explains why a replacement lock is on the bill alongside the entry charge. Keys cut should be their own line priced per key, since the number varies job to job and customers query it if it's buried inside a bigger number.
What do locksmiths typically charge?
| Region | Typical billing |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £60 to £100 daytime callout, £90 to £150 out of hours |
| United States | $50 to $100 service call, $75 to $150 after hours |
| Australia | A$80 to A$130 callout, A$120 to A$200 after hours |
| Canada | C$70 to C$110 callout, C$100 to C$160 after hours |
Indicative ranges for guidance. Your rate depends on experience, location and the job.
Do locksmiths charge tax on invoices?
UK locksmiths registered for VAT charge 20 percent on the full invoice, callout, labour and locks alike. Registration is required once turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 month period, below that it's optional. This job is billed directly to a private homeowner, so standard VAT applies rather than the construction industry domestic reverse charge, which only applies between VAT-registered contractors. There's no reduced rate for emergency work either, the same 20 percent applies whether the job is a daytime rekey or a 3am lockout.
What payment terms should a locksmith use?
Emergency callouts are paid on the spot, by card or contactless in most vans now, since there's no ongoing relationship with the customer to invoice later. Scheduled work for landlords or letting agents is more often net 14 or net 30 against a purchase order.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the out-of-hours rate apply for a job I called in at 9pm?+
Most locksmiths set the out-of-hours window from early evening, 9pm is a common start, through to early morning, rather than strict midnight to 6am, since that's when a callout actually pulls someone away from home. Check the specific hours in the callout terms.
Do I get charged if the locksmith can't get in without drilling the lock?+
Yes, the callout fee applies regardless of entry method, and a replacement lock is added if the old one is destroyed getting in. Non-destructive entry is attempted first because it avoids that extra cost, not because it's free if it fails.
Is VAT charged on the callout fee as well as the lock?+
Yes, if the locksmith is VAT registered, the full invoice including the callout is subject to VAT. There's no split between the service element and the goods element.
