A roofer's invoice for storm or wind damage usually ties back to an insurance claim, so the paperwork matters as much as the roof. Squares are the unit that makes sense to both the crew and the adjuster, one square covers 100 square feet of roof. Tear-off, underlayment and shingles are billed per square, while flashing and haul-away get their own lines because they don't scale the same way.
What should a roofer invoice include?
- Your company name, license number and contact details
- The property address, since that's what the insurance claim is tied to
- The insurance claim number if the job is being paid through a claim
- Squares of roof torn off and squares replaced, listed separately if they differ
- Underlayment, flashing and any decking replacement as their own lines
- Haul-away and dump fees
- The workmanship warranty and shingle manufacturer warranty terms

How do you itemise a roofer invoice?
Price tear-off, underlayment and shingles per square so the homeowner and the adjuster can check your numbers against the estimate. Flashing, decking repair and haul-away don't scale with roof size the same way, so keep them as flat or per-unit lines rather than folding them into the per-square rate. If the job came out of an insurance estimate, use the same line item names the adjuster used wherever you can, it saves a round of questions.
What do roofers typically charge?
| Region | Typical billing |
|---|---|
| United States (national average) | $350 to $550 per square installed, architectural shingles |
| United Kingdom | £60 to £110 per m2 for pitched roof re-covering |
| Australia | A$45 to A$75 per m2 for tile or metal reroofing |
| Canada | C$400 to C$600 per square installed |
Indicative ranges for guidance. Your rate depends on experience, location and the job.
Do roofers charge tax on invoices?
Georgia charges sales tax on the materials in a roofing job but not on labor, so the tax line should apply only to shingles, underlayment and flashing, not the tear-off or install charge. Rates run from the 4 percent state rate up to around 8 percent once county tax is added, so check the rate for the county the job is in. If the job is billed through insurance, the claim payout usually already assumes tax is added on materials, so leaving it off will short you.
What payment terms should a roofer use?
Insurance jobs are usually split, the adjuster releases an initial payment before work starts and the balance, including any supplement, once the job is done and the final invoice is submitted. For jobs the homeowner is paying directly, a deposit at material order and the balance on completion is standard.
Frequently asked questions
Do I charge sales tax on a job paid through insurance?+
Yes. The insurance payout is calculated to include tax on materials, so leaving it off the invoice just means you absorb that amount. Charge it the same way you would on a job the homeowner is paying for directly.
Should tear-off and re-roofing be one line or two?+
Two, if the crew has to remove the existing roof. Tear-off is time and dump fees regardless of what goes back on, so keeping it separate from the install charge makes the invoice match the estimate the adjuster already approved.
What if the final square count is different from the estimate?+
Note the difference on the invoice with a short explanation, rotten decking found once the old roof came off is the most common reason, and send the adjuster photos along with the revised invoice before asking for the supplement.
